Front Porch

Decorating Your Front Porch for the Holidays

You’ve decked the halls inside, and you might have even hung Christmas lights on your house. But what about the front porch? The front porch is one of my favorite spots to decorate because it’s one of the first things your guests see when the come over. It should be a warm and welcoming place that is an extension of the decor that you use inside. Today’s post is all about decorating your front porch for the holidays, and everything you need to make it festive and inviting.

For inspiration on how to make the perfect holiday centerpiece, you’ll love this post HERE.

Decorating Your Front Porch for the Holidays

This year, I went all in with faux garland and trees. I love the wintery forest feel, and how rustic it looks. Keep reading to see how I got this look!

Start with Your Door Decor

I started with this evergreen wreath and jazzed it up with deep burgundy velvet ribbon and added some bells to hang in the center. It’s amazing what you can do with a few little extra touches to make it your own. Secure the wreath to the door with a Command hook.

Next, I added faux garland around the door frame to give the whole look height. I hung one cedar twig garland on each side of the door, vertically, so the garland touches the ground. Then I hung a full, 4-foot faux spruce garland, horizontally. I love the variation of the two different branches.

Add in Faux Trees

To give more height and texture to the overall look of the front porch decor, I used varied heights of faux, pre-lit trees. Arrange the tallest tree in the back. Then add two smaller trees in front of the larger tree. Repeat the same arrangement on the other side of the door.

To make sure the trees have a uniform look, I opted to put them in matching pots of different sizes. These pots are perfect to use because you can use them beyond the holidays as well. They’re also a great price point. I decided to keep them as is with just lights for a natural, organic look. But you can certainly add ribbon, ornaments or other decor to match your own personal decor style.

Sprinkle in Other Decor

I went with a doormat you can use year round. I think buffalo plaid is a universal pattern that looks beautiful no matter what season we’re in. This one is also washable. Just throw it in the washer, and it will look brand new. Then, I layered this wreath doormat from McGee & Co.

To add a touch of glam and more lighting to the porch, I positioned these gold lanterns in front of the trees. I use these battery operated candles in each of them. With a click of remote control, I can turn them off and on. So easy and convenient! Finish the look with a vintage-looking sleigh.

3 Tablescape Ideas for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is fast approaching, and if you are playing hostess like me, you may be thinking – how am I going to decorate on top of everything else I have to do?! With so much food to prepare, it can be hard to think about adding one more thing to your plate. Luckily, I’ve got you covered. I’ve come up with 3 tablescape ideas for Thanksgiving that will suit any decor style. Now you can take one thing off your plate and leave more room for turkey!

If you’ve already moved past Thanksgiving and are ready for Christmas, then check out my previous post about the best Christmas home decor HERE.

Neutral Tablescape Idea

Shop the Post

For all my neutral lovers out there, I have curated the perfect neutral tablescapes for your Thanksgiving table! I always like to start a tablescape with some greenery, and I love the look of this green and yellow magnolia garland because it’s very realistic.

I added in some neutral-colored accent pumpkins as well. I’ve chosen some gorgeous gold tableware, like these chargers, napkin rings, and flatware that will give your table a little something extra. Paired with these adorable dotted plates, onyx plates, and gold-checked napkins and you’ve got the perfect neutral table with a little added flair! To see this tablescape come to life in action, check out my Instagram reel HERE.

Gold & Green Tablescape Idea

If you love the look of gold but want a more classic and timeless look, a rich, dark green is the perfect complement to gold. To create this tablescape idea, I kept some of the ideas from the previous one. For example, I kept the gold flatware and magnolia greenery because the undersides of the leaves go perfectly with the gold. After browsing through glassware, I chose these hammered drinking glasses with a gold rim. I love how minimalist but chic they look.

Next, to add depth and light to your tablescape, I always recommend adding tapered candles. These beautiful brass candle holders are perfect for adding a little elegance and warmth to your table. If you are having a large gathering for your Thanksgiving feast, these turkey place card holders are the perfect addition if you like to assign seats.

Rustic Tablescape Idea

neutral and rustic thanksgiving tablescape

Shop the Post

My last Thanksgiving tablescape idea is still a neutral option, but with a more rustic and natural feel. I took away most of the gold and added warmer colors. The fall colors of this grass garland are absolutely beautiful in person and it looks like something you could pull out of your backyard. I also decided to add this cream runner underneath the garland for a more layered look. The texture of it combined with the fringe and garland gives the whole table a little more of a rustic, but tasteful look.

The muted bronze of the chargers and the cinnamon color in the napkins pull in the colors of the garland making them the perfect complement to each other. Adding in the cream tableware, napkin rings, and pumpkins continue to give that natural look I am going for while adding a little dimension as well.

All of these ideas make me so excited for this Thanksgiving season, which one is your favorite?

I can’t believe November is already here because that means that the holidays are approaching! Time is just flying by this year and before we know it it will be 2023! I know many of us are already ready for the holiday season because some of your most loved items this month were holiday decor! So without further ado, let’s go over your most loved items from October!

Your Most Loved Items from October

Most Loved Individual Items

Your 10 most loved items from October were holiday-related again this month which leaves me very excited to continue with holiday content this month!

With all the Christmas shopping you will be doing this holiday season, don’t forget the gift wrap! This tartan plaid and ticking stripe gift wrap from Hearth & Hand will give your gifts the classic finishing touch they need.

There are so many types of garland to decorate with, but a favorite this month was this budget-friendly pine and juniper set. It gives a natural and woodsy flair to your home without being too much. It’s also a thinner garland so it would be perfect on your mantel, but also in other spaces like a buffet table.

Another favorite were these miniature faux pine trees by Studio McGee. They offer a warm and welcoming look to your home and can even be used year-round because the white pot can easily coordinate with any home decor style.

Most Loved Holiday Decor

pottery barn holiday decor

Holiday decor was so popular this month that I decided to focus on that instead of Amazon favorites because you all are clearly just as obsessed as I am! Pottery Barn was a very popular choice this month and it’s easy to see why. Every year they come out with such amazing pieces that are timeless and will last beyond a year.

One of my favorite items they come out with each year is reindeer sculptures. I love them because they can be utilized as accent pieces in so many places in your home. They also usually have multiple colors so you can choose what works best in your home. The Christmas Serving Tray and matching serving bowl are perfect for any festive parties you may have coming up, and the neutral white is perfect for any style.

Most Loved Collage

your most loved items from October wayday lighting

You also loved the Wayday lighting sale this month! There were so many gorgeous options for great prices that it was hard to choose what I liked best!

I love this light cluster clone because it is such a unique piece and it would look great in a room with high ceilings. This wagon wheel style chandelier is so beautiful, and its modern look would complement any style. Lastly, this dome pendant would bring a lovely warm glow to any kitchen or entryway.

Most Loved Home Photo

If you are wanting to style your dining room table this holiday season then I’ve got you covered. I love starting a tablescape with a large bowl, and this one is perfect because it can hold a lot and is slightly elevated off the table. I added different types of greenery like eucalyptus and cedar and then topped it with multiple types of marbled ornaments.

What were your favorite items from this month’s roundup? Let me know below in the comments!

The Best Christmas Home Decor

It’s that time of year again! The leaves are changing color and falling off the trees. The temperature is dropping, and the stores are already boasting their holiday sales and filling up with decorations. It’s already gotten me in the Christmas spirit, so I wanted to share some of my favorite festive finds for the most wonderful time of the year! I’ve gathered the best Christmas home decor options of the season! Be sure to shop early because many of these items sell out every year!

If you are needing some inspiration for decorating outside of your home, check out my post from last year where I show you all the best ways for Decorating Your Front Porch for the Holidays!

Pottery Barn Holiday Decor

Pottery Barn Holiday Decor

Everyone’s favorite holiday decor from last year at Pottery Barn is back again this year! I absolutely adore the St. Jude Bell-Shaped Scented Candles scented Yuletide Spice. I love that it is disguised as an ornament. It is such a cute decor piece with or without the top on. It would look perfect on a console or entryway table.

Another great addition would be the Ceramic Christmas Village Houses. The classic white allows for it to complement most decor very easily. I’m also obsessed with these Brass Merry Reindeer and have them sprinkled throughout the house. They’re fun on a fireplace like I have styled below.

These items are best sellers and sold out super fast last year, so if you were hoping to snag something last year and missed out, don’t wait too long!

McGee & Co Holiday Decor

You know I love McGee & Co, and I absolutely love this year’s holiday collection. The minimalist and natural look of their decor is right up my alley. Styling the nutcrackers and clusters of bells as accent pieces throughout the house is one of my favorite ways to pieces that I have multiples of. They also make a great addition to the dining room table as part of a tablescape or as an addition to a decorative tray. I love the rustic and vintage look of the sleigh bells with the beautiful brass finish.

McGee & Co. does an excellent job of creating gorgeous and natural looking greenery. Their Christmas trees will make you look twice and question if they are real trees. I love this flocked one because it has just a subtle hint of snow, and doesn’t look fake. If flocked trees aren’t your thing, this spruce is another great option, and is reminiscent of a real pine tree. The juniper and cedar wreaths are simple, yet elevate and add warmth to any doorway. Pair it with this festive doormat, and you’re ready to welcome the holidays!

Target Holiday Decor

If you are looking for similar items on a budget, look no further than our favorite retailer, Target! Studio McGee and Target itself have created a line of higher-end-looking pieces that would rival Pottery Barn and McGee & Co.

Target Holiday and Christmas Decor

They have so many great options from pillows to tree essentials and to beautiful wreaths for your front door. Target has everything you need to deck the halls this holiday season with their variety of products and for all price points.

In the photo above, I styled my entryway console table with a large faux tree. It gives the overall look some height and a pop of color. Then, I layered in other small holiday home decor pieces with the ceramic trees and small houses.

Just because traditional Christmas colors are green and red, does it mean you have to use traditional colors. If you prefer to keep with the colors of your home, you can decorate for the holidays in any color scheme you want. I typically gravitate towards dark greens, whites, golds, blacks and brass colors.

TJ Maxx & Marshalls Holiday Decor

TJ Maxx and Marshalls also have excellent dupes for many of these higher-end products. I love being able to mix budget-friendly options with them.

Styling TIps

Tray Styling Throughout Your Home

Trays are the perfect versatile piece to add chic style to any home design. Tray styling throughout your home easily wrangles loose decor items, transforming them into statement-making moments for a put-together look. Whether placed on a coffee table, countertop, or anything in between, this decorating essential adds style, function, and organization and is an affordable way to elevate your space.

Tray Styling Throughout Your Home

Shop Trays

With endless tray options to choose from, the task of selecting the perfect one may seem slightly overwhelming. Let’s simplify this step by determining where you’ll be placing it. The dimensions of your space will help narrow your overall selection and determine whether or not the tray will fit there, so start by measuring the surface’s area.

Tips to Consider When Choosing a Tray:

  • Size: Where are you placing your decorative tray? How much space do you actually have to work with? Are you adding the tray to an open surface, like a coffee table, or something smaller, like a nightstand? These questions will help determine what size will work best within your designated space.
  • Shape: With designs ranging from round to square to a rectangle and beyond, design aesthetics and personal preference play an important role in selection. Tip: round trays accentuate vertical, straight objects, while rectangle trays draw attention to round or soft features. Varying shapes are the perfect way to add contrast and dimension to your overall tray design.
  • Color: Sticking with a neutral color offers the most versatility for styling trays. This will allow you to reuse them throughout your home, easily swap them out for seasonal decor items, and add pops of color to brighten your space.
  • Depth: A tray that’s too deep may hide your stylish decor pieces, so think about the items you’ll be using and ensure they’ll be visible at eye level.

Tray Styling Throughout Your Home

Tray Styling Throughout Your Home-Living Room

Styling Your Tray

Before styling your decorative tray, let’s start with the Rule of Three. Three seems to be the magic number for interior design. This not only applies to tray styling but home decor in general. Arranging objects in groups of three or odd numbers are more visually appealing. The rule also applies nicely for groupings of five or even seven. You can separate by size, shape, or texture. For a more dynamic look, vary the heights while incorporating color and texture.

Arrange decor items to form a triangle. Experiment with the heights of your objects, avoiding block formations. Place your tallest piece in the middle and taper off with other decor pieces.

Selecting Your Decor Items

Layer in texture, details, and personal treasures to create the perfect photoshoot-ready tray for your home. When it comes to what type of decor items to use when styling your tray, the sky’s the limit. You can use just about any small decorative items you can think of, but here are a few categories for inspiration.

  • Floral Arrangement: Whether faux or real, arrangements are the perfect way to bring color to any tray. Start with a beautiful vase that offers a sleek silhouette, neutral color palette, and textured design, then add a few of your favorite seasonal stems for a touch of elegance.design, then add a few of your favorite seasonal stems for a touch of elegance.
  • Books: Hardcover books are a tray staple. Not only do they come in a variety of colors, but when stacked add height to your tray, creating a balanced look.
  • Personal Items: Give your tray added personality by using unique items, such as photos or personal mementos with special meaning. These also make for great conversational pieces.
  • Modern Accents: To give your tray a modern vibe, consider adding smaller items such as beads, wood knots, or chain links. In contrast, an eye-catching anchor object with height, like candlesticks or a small statue, will add depth and dimension.

For seasonal styling, think of bright colors and florals for spring. Step into fall by swapping items for autumn-inspired hues, like pampas grass, and pumpkins. Decorative bells, glass Christmas trees, and faux ferns will instantly usher in the winter season.

Tray Placement

Decorative trays are a quick way to enhance practically any room. Not only are they visually appealing, but they are great for organizing items you want to have on display, minimizing visual clutter. Whether placed on an ottoman, kitchen, or bathroom counter, they instantly elevate your space.

Kitchen: Create a kitchen tray that showcases snacks, kitchen cutlery, or even coffee essentials.

  • Snack bowl
  • Condiments
  • Decorative towels
  • Cooking utensils
  • Coffee essentials

Bathroom: Elevate your bathroom experience with a spa-inspired decorative tray.

Living Room: The living room is the hub of the home, where family and friends gather, so make sure your tray adds a warm and inviting touch to this space.

  • Stacked books
  • Small decor items
  • Ceramic vase with faux stems
  • Small dish to hold loose items

I recently shared How to Decorate Your Front Porch for Fall, using in-season florals, pumpkins, and other decor pieces. Instead of swapping out your entire front porch display for Halloween, layer in a few spooky accents that highlight your existing theme. Mixing in some spine-tingling and spooktacular decor is the perfect way to instantly go from all the fall feels to frightfully fun!

Skeletons, Spiders, and Bats, Oh My!

Skeletons are a simple but fun way to add a spooky vibe to your front porch. A hay bale creates the perfect seat for your bone-chilling greeter to say hello to your trick-or-treaters. He might even speak when spooken to! Get creative by adding clothing for a less frightful look. Make no bones about it, outdoor furniture on your front porch makes for great props. Add a skeleton or two for some extra Halloween flare!

Swap out your fall-inspired wreath with something a bit darker. This not only evokes a subtle side of eerie but makes a high-spirited statement. It’s a simple yet festive way to add Halloween chills and thrills to your front door. The doormat is another easy and affordable addition. Scare up a little fun this year and opt for mats with bats, jack o’lanterns, or Halloween sayings.

Oversized spiders are on-trend this season. You can easily add them to the front of your house for an added creepy crawly look and pair them with a side of web for a simply fang-tastic appeal! If 6 to 8 feet arachnoid makes you feel like a Halloweenie, opt for smaller options that are simply too cute to be scary!

To make your porch pop with fright, try adding these stylish bats around the outside of your door. Not only will they give the illusion of taking flight but will make your guests instantly go batty. I recommend using painter’s tape to keep these birds of a feather from flying away into the night.

Spooky Ceiling Decor

Adding spooky touches to your fall front porch includes hanging boo-tiful decor from the ceiling. Experiment with skeletons, bats, spiders, or even festive lights. It’s the perfect way to add dimension, naturally drawing the eye to shadowy shapes while setting the mood for an enchanting Halloween night.

To hang, simply string fishing wire through the top of your decor. Use multiple knots at the end of the wire or a small amount of glue to keep things secure. Attach the string to the ceiling with a thumb tack or a command hook and hang at varying heights for an eye-catching frightful display.

Pumpkins to Jack-o’-lanterns

Carve out some good times by taking your assortment of pumpkins from your fall front porch and giving them a spooky makeover. Sweeten up this holiday into by making it a family affair that even the kiddos will enjoy. This frightfully fun activity is sure to be a crowdpleaser! There is magic in the night when pumpkins glow with candlelight, so add a flameless candle for a flickering warm glow.

How to Create a Gallery Wall

Using Templates

It can be difficult to simply look at a blank wall and visualize your desired layout. Using gallery wall templates is an easy way to ensure your pieces not only fit together, but give a flawless, styled look.

Templates offer the perfect design shortcut, especially if you’re starting from scratch. If you’ve already purchased your pieces, templates can be still be used for inspiration. They can help you identify your desired layout preference in order to achieve a cohesive design aesthetic.

Gallery Wall Tips:

  • Make sure the layout you select will work within your allocated space by experimenting with frame placement. Use paper cut-outs of each frame, then hang it with tape to see how the layout will look on the wall. This allows you to make adjustments while avoiding unnecessary nail holes.
  • Start with the main anchor piece of your gallery wall first, and then work outward. For a balanced look, use smaller frames around your focal piece.
  • Experiment with frame size and color for added visual interest.
  • Keep in mind that your gallery wall doesn’t have to include expensive art pieces to look and feel amazing. With so many affordable options, it is easy to create a curated look without the huge price tag!

Choosing Print Designs and Colors

Planning is foundational when designing a gallery wall. It’s essential to make sure everything works cohesively to bring your layout to life. The first step in choosing print designs is taking into account the color palette and tone of your home, then choosing a few dramatic prints that speak to you. The remaining gallery pieces should be more subtle and can be built around your main focal pieces.

To create a cohesive gallery wall, your artwork should balance both repeated and contrasting elements. The contrasting details will add character and variation, while the repeated features will help tie your overall design together. If you prefer your art style or prints to look uniform, you can still add contrast by varying the frame finishes.

When choosing color schemes for your art or prints, stick to a similar color palette. Ideally, choosing neutral colors will compliment your pieces while maintaining a polished look. Consider the existing wall color of your gallery and how that will impact your overall design aesthetic.

Impactful Gallery Wall Spaces in Your Home:

  • Staircase: The staircase gallery wall mimics the incline of the stairs subtly, ensuring all pieces are visible from the bottom floor.
  • Living room: Family room and living room gallery walls are another great option and vary in size depending on your allotted space.
  • Kitchen/Dining Room: A gallery wall in the kitchen or dining room can add the perfect homey, relaxed feel to your space. Grid galleries work well in kitchen spaces, creating the perfect polished look. For a formal dining room look, stick to modern frames and ensure symmetrical clean lines.
  • Shelf or Mantle: A shelf or mantle offers versatility without making things permanent. You can easily swap pieces for seasonal changes, holidays, or special occasions. For a uniform design, place the tallest piece in the back, adding dimension with medium and smaller pieces towards the front.
  • Small wall space: The entryway, hallway, powder room, or the spaces between windows are all ideal for smaller gallery walls. Linear positioning is best for a small gallery wall. The idea is to use fewer pieces instead of resorting to small pieces only.

Hanging a Gallery Wall

Leave about 2-4 inches between individual gallery wall pieces on all sides. Larger pieces will need more blank space around them. Post-it notes are the perfect hack for spacing in lieu of measuring. Standard post-its are 3 inches and will work well for large and medium pieces. Small post-its are 2 inches wide and are ideal for smaller pieces.

The vertical center of your gallery wall should be at eye level or around 60 inches from the floor. You’ll also want to ensure your gallery wall sits at least 4-6 inches above all furnishings. Keep in mind large walls will require size-able statement pieces and when working with taller walls getting the scale correct is vital.

Picture hooks are a great option to avoid large holes that are hard to patch. They’re designed to go between wall studs and create much smaller holes than your typical nail or screw. Besides limiting damage, they also hold 50 to 100 pounds, which means no limits when selecting art and prints for your gallery wall.

Artwork is a window into your life and grasping how to create a gallery wall is the best way to put your personalized story on display!
