You may be questioning whether accent walls are in or out. But like the fashion world…things never really go out of style…in fact, they just seem to get better! This trend has made a BIG comeback. While the previously conceived notion of simply painting one wall still rings true, your options are now endless! From shiplap to MDF, wallpaper to paint, and beyond, the sky’s the limit on location, colors, surfaces, and materials.

White paint throughout your entire space can be slightly one-note. So, the purpose of an accent wall, whether incorporating color, texture, or both, is to give your living space a unique stylish touch. Just like your home, your accent wall is purely personal. Don’t be afraid to be bold and make a statement, bringing different colors or patterns together to match your overall theme!

Shiplap

Raise your hand if you LOVE shiplap as much as I do!! The word shiplap has become synonymous with the queen of shiplap, Joanna Gaines. If you’re anything like me, shiplap instantly has you thinking of dilapidated buildings being turned into rustic-chic farmhouses!

While you might not be featured on an episode of “Fixer Upper” the good news is shiplap is easy to incorporate into your home. It adds a simple yet classic focal point to any room without overly distracting from the rest of your space.

I chose to integrate shiplap throughout my home on varying walls and ceilings. Mixing up the directional pattern allowed for the perfect contrasting texture! Whether applied in a horizontal, vertical, or chevron design it creates a seamless look with beautiful clean lines.

MDF

Rooms without an architectural feature can benefit from an accent wall, especially one with texture! So, if shiplap isn’t your style…you’re in luck…because there are endless alternatives to choose from like MDF, tile, plaster, rattan, and even living plant walls, just to name a few.

MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) is an engineered wood. It’s made from wood fibers bonded together with resin under heat and pressure. Using MDF is a budget-friendly option worth considering when adding a modern wood accent to your wall. Wood accents not only elevate your space but add drama and dimension to the room. Beyond affordability, it’s also lightweight, easy to work with, and doesn’t warp like traditional wood, which makes it a great beginner DIY project that anyone can do!

Wallpaper

Wallpaper is the perfect way to give your accent wall an upscale, classy feel! With endless designs available, you’re sure to find a pattern that suits your needs. Choose from traditional, non-pasted and even temporary designs. Textured options are also available, which give a fabric illusion for an added designer look!

I have a love for wallpaper that goes beyond words! It creates an opportunity to be bold in both color and pattern design, making an instant statement! I incorporated several wallpaper designs in different rooms throughout my home.

Tip: Measure your walls first to determine exactly how much you need before buying!!

Master Bathroom – Water Closet:

I incorporated this gorgeous Chesapeake earthy wallpaper in the master bathroom water closet and I absolutely LOVE how it turned out! The beautiful grey trees pop against an eggshell background in this toile wallpaper, and the soft distressed details give this wallpaper a fabric like appearance. This wallpaper is a repasted, coated heavyweight paper.

Mudroom:

In the mudroom, I went with a bolder wallpaper choice and selected this floral design by NewWall. I hung it on the top half of the wall, which creates the perfect amount of contrast and adds an eye-catching pop of color. It instantly transforms this space with its beautiful floral pattern design and creamy color palette.

Powder Room:

I wanted to have a little fun with my powder room, so I chose an edgy design with this charcoal stroke wallpaper pattern. The detailing showcases strokes and dots in a horizontal pattern, which creates stunning visual appeal with an added side of drama. Even better it’s a non-pasted design, so all you have to do is paste adhesive on your wall and press the paper on top!

Accent wall ideas: paint

Painted Accent Wall

Painting an accent wall might sound like the easier of the styling options, but if done incorrectly, can unintentionally detract from vs. enhancing the overall space.

Before heading to the nearest hardware store for paint swatches, it’s important to consider both room direction and natural focal points. Surprisingly, the amount of direct sunlight your room receives can affect the overall look and tone of your paint. However, choosing the wrong focal point can cause the space to look smaller instead of open and airy.

Following a few simple tips can help you determine the best color option and location for your accent wall.

Room Direction

  • North-facing rooms: opt for colors with warmer undertones to keep the room from feeling impersonal and uninviting.
  • East-facing rooms: opt for colors with cooler undertones to balance out the colors in the room.

Focal Points

  • Determine whether the wall you want to paint is a focal point or if it can be turned into a focal point.
  • Notice what areas of the room your eye is naturally drawn to when first walking into the room.

When designing my office space, I wanted to create a peaceful area where I could be productive. Three of my office walls are painted Benjamin Moore Simply White. The accent wall is Sherwin Williams Iron Ore. It’s a softer black than the Tricorn black I have on my doors. The black wall really makes the TV and frame pop!

I created the frame around my QLED Samsung TV, giving it a custom look. The entire process is saved in my Instagram highlights under “TV Frame DIY.”  When the TV is turned off, I use TV art mode to access decorative pieces from the Metropolitan Museum. Check out my highlight on how to do that under “TV Art Mode.”!

Unlike your typical full bathroom, you won’t have to fret over the potentially damaging effects of steam and humidity, so decor options are endless. Powder rooms are also small in overall size, which makes redesign possible and without breaking the bank! So, go big or go home!!

Wallpaper, lighting, fixtures, and decor should all interconnect creating a cohesive look, so let your imagination go wild because it’s the unexpected that makes a powder room great!

Wallpaper

I have a love for wallpaper that goes beyond words! It offers the perfect opportunity to be bold in both color and pattern design. Due to its smaller space, the powder room allows you to be a little edgier and dare I say slightly LOUD with your wallpaper choice!

For my powder room, I went with this stroke design. The small detailed pattern showcases strokes and dots in a horizontal pattern, which creates stunning visual appeal. Even better it’s a non-pasted design, so all you have to do is paste adhesive on your wall and press the paper on top. Pro-tip: measure your walls first to determine exactly how much you need before buying!!

The right wallpaper design makes all the difference, adding just the right amount of personality to any powder room space. So, whether it’s one wall or four, don’t forget to incorporate wallpaper for an eye-catching statement!

Towel Bars, Rings & Hooks

When it comes to design, towel bars tend to take a backseat! They’re not typically at the forefront of your mind when styling a space. The good news is high-end towel bars are now making their way into bathrooms! With a standout feature design, they’re the perfect way to enhance your powder room style!

Generally speaking, the towel bar height should be 48″ from the floor to the center of the bar, but I suggest aiming for somewhere between 44-48″. When determining the best height, take into consideration the overall layout of your space. If your bar or ring is over a vanity, hang it so the bottom of your towel is at least a few inches above the vanity (typically 18-22″ above, measuring from the bottom of the ring or bar).

Another consideration when determining optimal towel bar placement is the location of light switches and outlets and also adjusting bar height for small kiddos.

Speaking of kiddos…why can’t they keep the towel on the rack!?! Well, you’re in luck because I have you covered!! I love THIS simple solution and it’s pretty too! You do need a longer towel for this to work properly, so I’m linking my favorite HERE!

Mirrors

One of my favorite pieces in this space, besides the wall art, is this gorgeous slope oval mirror. It offers a modern look with its clean lines while adding the perfect touch of polished detailing. I absolutely love the sleek profile along with its timeless elegant style. An added bonus is the pivot feature, which makes for easy adjusting!

When choosing a mirror for this space it’s important to look for something that complements your overall theme and style, helping to pull the final look together! Secondary design elements like mirrors are where the magic can really happen, as it offers the opportunity to do something a little more interesting!

Wall Art

You want your aesthetic on display in every corner of the home so that each room appears to flow effortlessly into the next. Blank bathroom walls can look sterile, which is why wall art is the perfect addition to your powder room space!

If you’ve followed me any length of time you know just how much I adore my fur baby family! What better way to pay homage to our four-legged friends than displaying a thoughtfully hand-crafted self-portrait for all to see!! Our Yorkie is such a little old man and we love him so much!

I know…you’re probably wondering exactly how we pulled this magical piece of artwork off…thank you Etsy!! Believe it or not Etsy offers custom pet portraits in various sizes at incredibly affordable prices! The process is super simple! Just choose a costume, add any special requests, and send 2-3 photos of your pet after purchase. That’s it!! It honestly was the perfect finishing piece to complete our powder room design! Definitely saved the best for last…in my opinion!

Primary Bath

How to Design a Primary Bathroom

My vision for our primary bathroom was for it to be spa-like. At the end of a long day, it’s nice to have a place to unwind and relax. I continued my love of neutrals into the bathroom and incorporated texture and warm tones to make it feel welcoming. If you’re searching for tips on how to design a primary bathroom, I hope this post gives you lots of inspo.

Shower Design

how to design a primary bathroom

We opted to do a walk-in shower in our primary bathroom as opposed to including a tub too. I must say it feels like you’re at a high-end spa with a walk-in shower, and love how it turned out.

The tiles are the Zellige tiles from Zia Tile in the color ‘Pure White.’ This is a similar version HERE. The color variations in the tiles create a beautiful contrast throughout the shower. Then, we used UltraColor Plus FA in ‘Frost’ for the grout. You also want to make sure you get a good seal on your grout to help keep moisture out and the shower clean. See this Instagram reel for a closer look at the tiles.

I wanted the shower floor to flow well with the tile, but I still wanted it to be different. So, I opted for a hexagon tile with slight color variation just like the wall tile. I think it turned out exactly how I envisioned it.

For the shower fixtures, we used a brass tone throughout. They’re from the Brizo Litze collection. We included a combination of a shower head and a hand spray option. Having a hand spray option is amazing to have for cleaning the shower, too.

The glass enclosure was custom-made by a local glass company. They also made our glass piece that sits behind our kitchen range too. Read more about it HERE.

If you’re looking for a shower bench, I highly recommend this one. It’s not too big or small, and love the teak wood against the white shower.

If you’re intimidated by the thought of cleaning glass shower doors, I assure you they’re easy to clean! Watch this Instagram reel, and I’ll show you exactly how I do it using this cloth.

Bathroom Floor Tile

To keep with the light and airy theme of the bathroom, we chose the 12″ x 24″ honed Daphne white marble. It’s from Daltile and the perfect blend of whites and grays.

Vanity Design

how to design a primary bathroom

I warmed up the space a bit with the darker tone of the vanity. It’s made of white oak with a custom stain that was used throughout our house. The color was also used on some of our kitchen cabinets and areas of the house exterior.

Like the shower, we used brass fixtures for the sink and cabinet pulls. The sink fixtures are also from the Brizo Litze collection. The countertop is Mont Blanc Quartzite, similar to our kitchen island and butler’s pantry countertops.

Our knobs and pulls are both from RH. However, I found similar and budget-friendly options HERE and HERE.

Wall Color

The wall color is Simply White by Benjamin Moore. Most of the interior walls of my home are painted this color for good flow throughout the home. This includes all trim. However, we did use different sheens. I did a full blog post on all the paint colors used throughout our home found HERE.

  • Flat: ceiling
  • Eggshell: walls and trim
  • Satin: doors and shiplap

Water Closet

how to design a primary bathroom

The last part of the bathroom is the water closet. Having a space just for the toilet is so nice, especially if you’re sharing a bathroom with someone else. I incorporated this gorgeous earthy wallpaper in this part of the bathroom, and I love how it turned out. We installed a Toto toilet and added this bidet!

Mixing Metals in One Room

Do you love two different finishes of metals and can’t decide which one to use in a single space? Why not use both? You can totally mix metals in a space. In the primary bathroom, I mixed brass and satin nickel. I think it adds so much interest to a space versus just doing one. You’ll notice our light fixture on the mirror and the chandelier are satin nickel.

Some tips that I stick to are:

  • Keep it to 2 metals per space.
  • Be consistent with the finish on each item. For example, if you choose brass lighting, you should stick to brass for all the lighting in the room.
  • Don’t stress if the shades of the metal aren’t exactly the same. The brass plumbing fixtures did not match perfectly with the cabinet hardware. However, since they are not right next to each other, you don’t even notice it. You only see brass!
