Styling Tips for Outdoor Spaces

Though spring has decided to take a little longer to show up to Utah, I can’t help but look forward to spending more time in our outdoor spaces. Our outdoor areas should feel like an extension of our indoor spaces, and somewhere we enjoy being. Whether it’s on your back patio or front porch, I’m sharing styling tips for outdoor spaces, so that you can be sure to utilize and enjoy yours! If you would like to see my front porch styling in action check out my reel HERE.

Styling Tips for Outdoor Spaces

Step 1: Add Planters and Greenery

With any outdoor space, it’s nice to incorporate greenery and flowers. It gives the area color and texture. Whether you choose to use real or faux plants and flowers, you can make either option work! There are so many beautiful faux greenery options specifically made for outdoor spaces. So, if you don’t quite have a green thumb, don’t worry. There are still plenty of great options, and I linked some of my favorites below.

To elevate your outdoor space and add dimension, try incorporating different-sized planters throughout your space. Don’t forget to add some greenery on your side tables, coffee table, or dining table, too. I prefer to use neutral-colored planters with different textures like wicker, resin, and concrete.

Step 2: Incorporate Texture with Rugs

Next, anchor the space with an outdoor rug. This designates the area and creates a warm and inviting feel. With rugs, don’t be afraid to use a bold pattern or even a bolder color, if that’s your personal style.

For a porch, I like to layer an outdoor rug underneath my doormat. Generally, a 4’x6′ rug works well to layer underneath a doormat. The goal is for the edges of the rug to be exposed to show a nicely layered and well-decorated look.

Step 3: Create Conversation Spaces

Once the planters and rugs are in place, it’s time to add furniture. The type of furniture completely depends on the space itself and how you plan to utilize it. First, determine how much space you have for furniture. Then, determine how you dream of using the space. Would a dining table work better than a sofa-style piece if you dine outside often? Or, would a sofa and some comfortable chairs create a more relaxed vibe?

Don’t forget about your front porch, too. We currently have a daybed swing on our front porch, and I absolutely love it! For us, it’s a great spot to read, lounge, and relax. Before the daybed, we had these Adirondack chairs and a concrete side table, which was also nice. If you have a smaller porch, try adding a bistro set or two chairs and a side table as we did above. That way, you’ll have the option to sit comfortably on your front porch if you want.

Step 4: Layer in Decor and Ambiance Pieces

The last styling tip for outdoor spaces is to finish the look with some outdoor decor. To really make it feel like an extension of your indoor living area, you want to add some simple touches that make a big difference. Try stringing outdoor lights around your deck, pergola, awning, or porch. It’s a fun way to add lighting when it gets dark without having to turn on beaming bright lights.

You can also add a lantern to your coffee table, side table, or next to your plants on the ground. Lanterns come in all shapes and sizes, and the taller options look great layered next to a planter. Use faux candles as another way to lighten up the space.

A patio space is such a great place to get outside, unplug, and enjoy spending time with family and friends. My hope is that these tips help you create a backyard oasis for you to enjoy throughout the warmer months ahead.
