Creating A Functional Bedside Table

A bedside table adds a unique decorative touch to any bedroom. It can add wonderful detail, make your space look more attractive or even make a strong statement…key word being CAN! Oftentimes, bedside tables become a catch-all for clutter and lose their potential to add style and mood. Today, we’re changing that by creating a functional bedside table that’s both practical and aesthetically pleasing, so you can focus on relaxation, rest and counting those sheep!

Choosing the Right Size

You might not think so, but height is actually a major factor when creating a functional bedside table. Something too short, and you may find yourself cascading onto the floor while attempting to set your alarm clock. If it’s too high, you’re likely overreaching, which could lead to a plethora of unwanted injuries. Raise your hand if you’ve ever watched your cell phone slowly start to spiral downward on its descent towards your face! So, let’s avoid listing “furniture” as the cause of injury on those hospital admission papers by measuring correctly.

Take Measurements

A good rule of thumb is to keep the bedside table a few inches (ideally “2- 4″) above and away from the bed. You’ll want to measure the height of your mattress while on the frame. If you’re eyeballing it, which I don’t recommend, think the same height as the mattress. Keep in mind the standard size of most side tables is somewhere between 24″- 28” tall.

Consider Your Needs

Of course, your bedside table should be stylish while effortlessly blending with the rest of the room, but what good is style without function. With endless bedside table options to choose from, you’ll need to determine what your own personal needs are. Questions like “How much space do I have to work with?”, “What type of essentials will I be storing?” and “How much storage space do I need?” will help narrow down selections.

Storage Options

With devices, chargers, remotes, beauty products, jewelry, books and more, our tableside retreat can quickly turn into disorganized chaos. Having a storage plan will ensure everything has a proper place while still keeping essentials handy.

The type of bedside table you choose will directly impact your storage options. Although there are many variations available, generally speaking, side tables fall into one of three categories.

  • Bedside Chests – Think mini dresser. These tables typically have between two to three easy-glide drawer options, which allow for ample storage space, like THIS Dream On Me Universal 3 Drawers Chest from Amazon.
  • Bedside Cabinets – Cabinets are a great option for storing those items you’d prefer to be “out of sight”! It’s easy to tuck objects of any size away with its dual door style frame. THIS Sunburst Cabinet Nightstand from France and Son adds both character and texture to any space with a sunburst pattern and aged brass-finished iron base.
  • Bedside Tables – Better known as accent tables, these tend to offer the most allure but afford the least amount of storage. Opt for tables with a larger surface area, especially if you plan on incorporating a bedside lamp. Selecting an option with an added shelf or open frame, like THIS Duke 15″ Metal Nightstand from Pottery Barn, will accommodate the use of a tray or basket for storage.

Styling Tips

When styling a bedside table, we want the elements of function, beauty and simplicity to come together, further infusing a sense of calm and restfulness into our space. It’s important to avoid over styling this piece. Think less is more! Although, styling might seem intimidating, following a few simple tips will help keep things easy!

Avoid a Cluttered Look

In general, when it comes to styling a functional bedside table, three is the perfect number. This will keep things clean and simple, avoiding a cluttered look. This can be adjusted depending on the overall size and surface area of the table.

  • Small Tables – Stick to two items on top that vary in scale for visual interest.
  • Large Tables – Limit to four items on top, infusing different textures and patterns for contrast.

Whatever you decide, don’t forget to leave a designated spot for your morning cup of coffee or nightly glass of water!

Tableside Accessories

The side table is a key piece of bedroom furniture. So, when creating a functional bedside table, let each accessory be intentional and thoughtfully placed, enhancing the overall surface vs. concealing it.

Lighting

Lighting plays an important role in styling and sets the overall tone and mood of your space. Lamps are a great way to add texture and color, as well as personality. Soft lighting will help foster a warm and inviting atmosphere. For all the book lovers remember a good reading lamp is a must!

Lighting should be scaled to the size of the bedside table and bed. If space is a concern, a wall mount or sconce may be a better option than a freestanding lamp.

Shop Lighting
Books

Keep book selections within the same color palette of the bedroom. You can separate books by color block or arrange by size, with spine facing out or stacked lying down. Using the stacked method will add height while also creating the perfect spot for a small decorative bowl or tray.

Shop Books
Trays & Decorative Bowls

Trays and decorative bowls not only serve as great accent pieces, adding visual interest and depth, but offer an ideal place to corral smaller items like coins, watches, jewelry and keys.

They can be used on both the table top surface or bottom side, adorning your stacked selection of favorite books! Trays should be shorter in length than the bedside table to keep a seamless look.

If your bedside table is short on storage, baskets are a great addition and sit perfectly underneath an open frame or on an empty shelf.

Shop Trays & Bowls
Greenery

Bringing nature into your serene space is never a bad idea! Adding greenery, plants or even a vase of flowers will add a lush garden touch, bringing a natural element into your bedroom.

If live plants require too much attention, there are great faux options available that don’t require upkeep and maintenance! Check out my blog post HERE for a faux greenery run-down for your home.

Shop Faux Greenery
Personal Touches

Frames with personal photos offer a beautiful personalized touch. I can’t think of a better way to drift off to sleep than gazing at the ones you love the most! Framed artwork can also be incorporated, adding both a pop of color and character to your bedside table. A favorite scented candle is another fantastic option, adding a hint of luxury and helping you settle in while you open your favorite book!

The Best Faux Greenery for Your Homes

I absolutely love adding greenery to my home! It adds dimension and brightens every space! If I ever find an area in my home that looks incomplete, I try to add a plant or tree to bring it to life! We have been incorporating faux greenery into our home lately, and I thought it would be nice to give you a run-down of the best pieces that I have come across.

Pros of Faux Greenery

What are the benefits? There are quite a few:

  • There is much less upkeep and maintenance with faux greenery. Once you’ve placed it where you want it, you’re done! There is no watering, there is no moving it to a different window when you realize it isn’t in a great spot in the house, and there’s no dirt. (No need for a green thumb, here!)
  • It’s much more cost-effective. Real fiddle leaf figs can range anywhere from $50 to $250 (and if it dies, it dies). This 60-inch fiddle leaf fig from World Market is only $150 and will last for years!
  • They are easy to transport. If you’ve ever tried to transport plants from one home to another, you know how big of a task it can be. With faux greenery, you simply wrap it up, place it in a box, and move it to the next location.
  • They won’t attract pests. Real greenery tends to attract small pests.
  • They’re safer. Some plants (even the leaves) can be toxic to children and pets, so opting for faux greenery can actually be a wise decision for the safety of your home!

Ask yourself a few questions to determine if this is the right choice for you. Questions like, “Do I have room for plants to grow?”, or “Do I have the time to take care of a real plant?” If the answer to both of these questions is “no”, then these next few pieces of faux greenery are going to be amazing pieces to add to your home decor.

With any outdoor space, it’s nice to incorporate greenery and florals. It gives the area color and texture. There are so many beautiful faux greenery options specifically made for an outdoor space. So if you don’t quite have a green thumb, don’t worry. You still have plenty of options that I linked below. Look HERE to see how I use greenery in my outdoor space.

Tips and Tricks

When choosing your pieces, make sure to observe the texture and style. Faux greenery has evolved over the years, and it can look classy and elevated when used correctly. Faux plant retailers have improved the material used for these pieces to give different textures, feels, and dimensions. The choices I’ve shared above are great for a modern, neutral home!

My Go-To Watermelon Jalapeno Margarita Recipe

Summer is officially here and with summer comes warmer weather, longer days, and lots of time to spend with friends and family! I love to sit on our porch swing bed as the sun sets and enjoy the beautiful Utah skies with an excellent, refreshing margarita! This Watermelon Jalapeno Margarita recipe is a show-stopper for sure. It’s easy to whip up for guests if you’re hosting a summer dinner, and perfect if you just want to make a fun treat for yourself; and like any good summer margarita recipe, my goal is for this to be fun, delicious, and easy!

Shop these items and more from my kitchen to make sure you have all of the entertaining essentials!

blender and watermelon jalapeno margaritas on kitchen counter

My Go-To Watermelon Jalapeno Margarita Recipe

This recipe can be blended (my preferred method) or over ice! Either way makes for a delicious margarita! Here’s how I create this amazing drink:

Ingredients

  • 3 oz watermelon juice
  • 1-2oz tequila
  • 1 oz triple sec
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 1 oz or more Jalapeno Simple Syrup
  • fresh jalapeno slices

For the Jalapeno Simple Syrup:

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1-2 jalapeno (remove seeds and ribs for less spice)

How to Make the Jalapeno Simple Syrup

Add sugar, water, and jalapeños to a small saucepan. Bring mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally until sugar dissolves.  Let cool.  Strain the seeds and jalapeños from the syrup.  (I saved the jalapeños to add to my margarita.  They were delicious! 😋)

Directions

Add watermelon juice, tequila, lime juice, and jalapeno simple syrup to a blender with a cup of ice and blend.  Garnish with watermelon and sliced jalapeño.  If you prefer on the rocks, just skip the blender and pour it into an ice-filled glass, and stir.  Don’t forget to run a lime along your glass rim and lightly dip it on a plate of course salt.  Not necessary, but oh so good!  Enjoy this watermelon jalapeno margarita!

This collage includes the top best sellers overall this month. The number one best seller all month long was this utility cropped jumpsuit! This is a great casual outfit to wear on the weekends. It’s made of a light linen material and comes in four colors. The jumpsuit is under $30 and can be worn with mules, white sneakers or slide sandals to complete the look.

Another top selling item this month is this wood and glass cabinet. It’s a beautiful piece to include in a living room or at the end of the hallway. Add your favorite home decor elements like books, faux greenery, a clock or statue to show your personal design style.

Styling Your Front Porch for Summer

Are you looking to refresh your porch for summer? Styling our front porch for the seasons is is one of my favorite ways to add some curb appeal to our home! Here’s some inspiration for your porch refresh this summer!

If you’re looking to get ahead and plan for fall, here’s how I styled our porch this previous fall season.

Choose a Wreath

I love to utilize a wreath as the centerpiece of our front door. It allows me to select items and pieces that complement one another by pointing back to the chosen wreath. Unlike my fall wreaths with more muted colors and tones, I like to go for a wreath full of greenery in the summer.

Be Creative with Your Layering

If you’ve seen my fall and holiday door styling, you’ll be familiar with my love for layering. You can layer your rugs (ex. your welcome mat on top of a small rug), layer your plants with various heights and textures, and add in these lanterns. I used all faux plants this year because we are in a drought.  You’ll see more of them around my front porch swing.

Our black door color is Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black. We painted our entire exterior Benjamin Moore Simply White too. What can I say? It’s a versatile color. Our timbers and tongue and groove are painted a semi-solid stain to match Sherwin Williams Morris Room Grey – a warm, hearty color. It’s a great color to use on cabinets as well.

Our hanging swing bed is the perfect spot to sip on your morning cup of coffee, read a book, and enjoy all the sights and sounds of summer. I chose to incorporate a rug and plants similar to my front door. I also chose pillows that use the same color scheme as my front door (as well as the interior of my house. More on that, HERE). Various sizes, shapes, and textures make it a welcoming place for guests.

How to Style a Console Table

Do you have a plain, blank wall in your home that you just don’t know what to do with? Your answer? A console table is the perfect piece to include in a variety of spaces throughout your home, including those pesky plain, blank walls. Console tables not only elevate a space, but can be a functional too. Today, we’re talking about how to style a console table and where you can put them throughout your home.

If you’re interested in tips to style a coffee table, you’ll love this post HERE.

Where to Incorporate a Console Table

how to style a console table

Entryway or Foyer

The most popular place you see a console table placed in a home is in an entryway or foyer. Typically you have a blank wall that needs a little something, but can’t take up too much space because it’s where guests walk in and out. A console table is the first thing people see when they enter your home. So it’s fun to include decor items that represent your style and personality. It’s also a great place to include functional pieces like a mirror, bowl (for keys) and baskets. But more on that later!

End of a Hallway

Another place to incorporate a console table is at the end of a hallway. For instance, we have one at the end of the hallway next to where our bedrooms are located in our home.

Behind a Sofa

If you have a sofa that’s not up against a wall, a console table is a great piece to put against it. It not only allows the space to look more complete, it also helps separate the living room from the rest of the house if you have an open floor plan.

Large Empty Wall

If you have a large empty hall that you just don’t know what to do with, try adding a long console table. Whether this space is in a bedroom, living room, dining room or another room in your home, a console table can be included anywhere.

How to Style a Console Table

how to style a console table

Step 1: Measure the Space

The first step in styling a console table is finding the RIGHT size console table for your space. Is the wall short or long? Console tables come in varying heights and lengths, so you want to be sure it’s going to fit in the space your placing it in. Or on the flip side, you want to make sure it’s substantial enough to cover the space you’re wanting to incorporate it.

If you’re planning to include a table behind a sofa, measure the height of the sofa. You want the console table to be as close to the height of the sofa as possible, so the table doesn’t look awkward next to it.

Step 2: Add Storage Baskets to Create a Base

There’s a caveat to adding baskets, I should start off by saying. If you have a console table that looks like the black and white one I have in my entryway (see the above picture), then there’s no need for baskets because of the bars on the bottom. However, if it’s an open-concept bottom, then I would suggest adding storage baskets or stools underneath to balance out the bottom. Since you’re going to include decor on the table and above the table (more on that in a second), you need to balance the overall look with a large piece or two of decor like stools or baskets on the bottom.

Baskets are great because they store items like throw blankets or extra shoes. The stools are great because you can pull those out, if you need additional seating or want to use them to prop your feet up while you’re sitting in a chair in the living room.

Shop Baskets and Stools

Step 3: Arrange One or Two Large Home Decor Pieces

Next, it’s time to add bold, large home decor pieces on top of your console table. These can be items like a lamp, vase with faux florals or greenery or a large sculpture. These pieces should have some height to them. If your table is short length wise, you really only need one large piece and then sprinkle in a few smaller decor pieces. But typically you need two large pieces. Place the larger decor pieces on each end of the table with the smaller home decor pieces in the middle. You could do a large lamp on one side and a vase with in-season florals or greenery on the other.

Shop Large Decor Pieces

Step 4: Sprinkle in Other Smaller Decor Pieces

Once you have your large items placed, sprinkle in other home decor pieces on the table. It could be a shallow basket with a candle and a picture frame sitting inside it. Or another idea would be a small clock and a bowl to hold car keys or other small items that are being brought in and out of the house on a daily basis.

You can also stack your favorite books on the table too, alone or have them prop other home decor pieces up higher, like I did below.

Shop Small Decor Pieces

how to style a console table

Step 5: Add a Picture or Mirror Above the Console Table

To finish the whole look of the console table, you can add a piece of artwork or a mirror above the console table. Now that’s of course if it’s against the wall. If it’s against something like your sofa, you can skip this step. 🙂 A mirror is great to have next to the door to do one last once over before you head out the door. A mirror also helps a space seem bigger.

However, if you have already incorporated a mirror somewhere else in the room, then maybe a piece of art that reflects your own personal design style would work better.

Shop Mirrors and Art

But this month, there was even a fashion and a beauty product included. I’m mostly a styling and home decor page, but I sprinkle in some of my favorite fashion pieces and beauty products from time to time. So I was excited to see that you all loved them too this month. This collage includes the top 10 best sellers overall this month. The number one best seller all month long was this porch swing! It’s the perfect little addition to a porch or patio. Curl up and read a book while enjoying the beautiful weather. You could even take a nap on it, it’s that comfortable! We love ours and added a few pillows to make it look and feel extra cozy.

In April, I also gave you a close up of the black side table I have in our bathroom, and you all jumped on it when I shared that. It’s the perfect size for a smaller space to hold home decor or room necessities like extra towels, if you have it in the bathroom. The mirror top really makes it look unique and vintage-inspired and really love the shape of it.

This past month was also the first time in a while that a fashion and beauty item made the top 10 most loved items for the whole month. These Madewell jeans are the perfect mix of trendy meets comfort. Because the Sephora sale happened at the beginning of April, I shared a few of my favorite products from Sephora. This makeup brush cleaner was hit! It’s a great product to use to get all the product buildup off your brushes.

Amazon is a great place to look for home decor items, furniture and handy gadgets for the home. These were some of the top sellers from Amazon this past month. This hanging basket is adorable to hang on a wall to act as a wall decor piece. Add faux greenery to really make it pop against your wall. These candlestick holders are perfect for styling on a dining table, a console table or a fireplace mantel. They look very high-end, and love the color of them.

Do you have plans to update your living room decor or furniture? The VIP Sale is the perfect time to purchase those pieces you need to do just that. This couch is a great neutral color to include in your living room because it will most likely go with existing colors. A Bedroom Makeover with Joss & Main

Another room you can easily style with Joss & Main pieces is the primary bedroom. Start with an upholstered bed in a neutral color. Next, pick out two nightstands, one for each side of the bed. I typically prefer the nightstands to match with each other. However, I don’t think it’s necessary to match side tables in an area like a living room as long as their finishes are similar. Then, add two lamps to the side tables for additional lighting options. Next, you’ll need a dresser. I love this sleek black option with the brass pulls. The clean lines and the elegant contrast of the black and brass make this piece look very high-end.

Whether you have carpet, vinyl or hardwood in your primary bedroom, you can always layer a rug under your bed. It acts as an anchor to the space and adds color and texture. Depending on how big the rug and room is, you want to make sure the rug extends past the foot of your bed a couple feet, so it’s visible. Finally finish the space with a beautiful chandelier or ceiling fan. Joss & Main has a variety to choose from.

One of the items that made the list again this month was the 6 Quart Air Fryer! This air fryer is one of my most used kitchen items because of how easy it is to use. It’s also perfect for quick meals that you need in a hurry. The white with gold accents is aesthetically pleasing, so I don’t mind leaving it out on my counter all the time. It’s easy to see why this remains a top contender each month!

Another best seller was this adorable tweed mini sweater dress. The scalloped trim adds a chic touch. The best part, it has pockets! This would be a perfect dress for Easter!

With Easter coming up, I couldn’t help but purchase a few Easter decor items to style throughout our home. I love these golden bunnies. They’re neutral enough to be placed anywhere. I also love these silk tulips. Place them in a vase on your coffee table, console table, or bookshelf. They are the perfect spring flower! They also get bonus points because they are silk, so you don’t have to worry about the upkeep!

The most loved collage this month was the Abercrombie spring favorite! My favorite items for the spring this year are muted neutral tones so I can pair them with pops of color. One of my personal favorite pieces from Abercrombie this spring is this ruffle strap maxi dress. I love the flowy tiered skirt, and the fitted bodice is so flattering. You can easily dress this up with some sandals or heels. For a more casual look, throw on a denim jacket and trendy sneakers!

Lastly, we have our favorite home photo of the month – our guestroom! We put a lot of love and effort into this refresh, and it has remained a popular home photo for the last couple of months. I love everything about this room and so do you!

The end tables are some of my favorite pieces in this room. They are shadowbox-inspired so you can display items in the glass enclosure which makes them a unique piece to have. The bedding we chose for this room is great too because it is SO comfy. From the sheets to the comforter and throw, our guests will never want to leave!

The spring season is officially here, and I hope we’ve turned a corner with warmer weather in Utah. With the spring season, comes beautiful flowers, longer days and Easter. Easy Easter Dessert Recipe

My husband is the chef in the house, but I still know my way around the kitchen. This year, I’m excited to make these adorable Peeps Rice Krispies treats. You either love Peeps or you don’t on their own. But when you melt them down with butter into a Rice Krispies treat, they become everyone’s favorite. I also love that this dessert has all the festive Easter colors included. The kids go crazy for them. They’re easy and delicious, which checks all the boxes for me.

Peeps Rice Krispies Treats Recipe

15 individual Peeps per color (pink, yellow, blue)

1 tablespoon of butter

2 cups Rice Krispies cereal

Directions: Spray a 9″x13″ pan with cooking spray. Melt butter in a saucepan over low heat. Mix in the first color of Peeps with the butter and stir together until the Peeps and butter are melted together. Be sure to do each color separate. Remove from heat. Next, add in your Rice Krispies cereal to the melted butter and Peep mixture. Finally, pour the mixture into the pan and press the mixture evenly throughout the pan. Repeat this process for the other two colors. Make a layer of each color until you have three layers with the pink, yellow and blue. Cool completely and serve. You can use Easter-themed cookie cutters to cut cute shapes or just simply cut them into squares.

Coffee Table Styling Tips

A coffee table is both a functional piece of furniture and a place where you can really show off your own personal home decor style. There’s a bit of a method to it when it comes to styling your coffee table. So today I’m sharing my coffee table styling tips, and giving you the inside scoop of what makes a perfectly styled coffee table.

For more home decor pieces for styling throughout your home, you’ll love this post HERE.

Coffee Table Styling Tips

Choose the Perfect Coffee Table for Your Space

Before you can decorate your coffee table, you first need to choose the right coffee table for your space. I’ve rounded up my favorite options from high-end designer to budget-friendly options below. To choose the best table for your space, determine how much space you’re working with. Do you have a small space or a large space to fill?

You also want to purchase a coffee table that will fit your home’s style. Do you have a midcentury modern, traditional, farmhouse? Whatever design style you enjoy, I guarantee there’s a perfect coffee table for you and within your price point.

Start with Your Focal Point Piece

Once you have your coffee table, you’re ready to start styling. I did a reel showing exactly how I style my coffee table HERE. Now whether you have a circular, rectangular or square coffee table, you want to style your decor in a triangle.

Start with your focal point piece. I typically like my focal point piece to be a faux (or real) plant in a vase. This will be at the top of your triangle. You can arrange seasonal faux stems in a vase and change the florals each season. The focal point piece should be the tallest decor item of the coffee table.

Add Your Tray to Corral Items

Next, you want to add a tray to help corral items. Within your tray, you can add decorative books, coasters, a small box or candles. Whatever speaks to your lifestyle. This is the first leg to the bottom of your triangle.

The second leg of your triangle should be something a bit higher than your tray arrangement, yet a tad shorter than your focal piece. You want them to be differing heights to give the area dimension. This can be a beautiful sculpture, a stack of boxes or coffee table books. I like adding a decorative item to my stack of coffee table books to give it more height.

Boxes are great to add into your decor styling because you can hide things in them. So they’re not only beautiful, but functional. Another substantial piece you can add to your coffee table is a large bowl and add seasonal fillers. I love adding beads to a bowl when there isn’t an in-season filler to include.

Anchor the Bottom of Your Coffee Table

If your coffee table has a bottom shelf, you want to add in a few decor pieces to this area as well. However, you want this space to have one less grouping than the top of your coffee table. So for example, you’re probably going to have three groupings of home decor items on the top because you’re making a triangle. Therefore, you only want one or two groupings on the bottom of your table. This could be a large basket, a stack of boxes, books or other decor items that you love. You just want these pieces to act as the anchor to your table, so they need to be large and substantial.

Besides the kitchen, the living room is another popular gathering place for the home. So it should reflect your family’s lifestyle, and a cozy place to gather to watch movies, talk and enjoy time together.
